Each week on Tuesday evenings* between 6.30pm and 7.30pm, the Salle Blanche in Neuville de Poitou’s Espace Jean Dousset becomes an English-speaking zone! *During school term times

A group of 10 - 12 enthusiastic local people keen to practise their English meets for an hour of conversation. The sessions are run by Lesley & Duncan Webster, native English speakers who have made Neuville their home, and started the group ten years ago.

The topics of discussion are chosen in advance by members of the group. Many relate to practical issues which may be encountered when travelling in non French-speaking countries, such as:

transport problems Bus

ordering food and drink Enseigne auberge

sightseeing Batiment

talking about the weatherParapluie

Other subjects have included:

  • Hobbies, sport, and leisure activities

  • Childhood memories, and families

  • Films, books and music

  • Information technology, smartphones and the internet

  • Customs and traditions in France and in England

Although the members of the group have varying levels of English, all share a desire to speak the language. The focus is firmly on communication and not necessarily on grammatical accuracy. Here are some comments from some of the participants:
